SEO for AI Overviews: useful content still beats invented ‘GEO hacks.’
What Google’s guidance means for teams trying to appear in generative search without producing scaled AI filler.

The short version
Generative search does not require a separate bag of tricks: publish original, crawlable, well-structured information that satisfies a real audience.
01
AI search still depends on the search foundation.
Google states that established SEO practices remain relevant to its generative search features because those experiences rely on core Search ranking and quality systems. Crawlability, useful page content, internal linking, clear titles, and accessible media still matter.
Creating hundreds of pages for slight query variations is not a durable AI-search strategy. Google explicitly warns that scaled content made primarily to manipulate rankings or generative responses can violate spam policy.
02
Create information worth citing.
Original examples, clear definitions, firsthand operating lessons, named sources, and specific decision frameworks give a page a reason to exist. Structure helps both people and systems understand it: one descriptive heading, focused sections, concise answers, and links to supporting evidence.
- —Answer a real decision completely instead of chasing a keyword count.
- —Add evidence, examples, or a useful framework competitors do not provide.
- —Use accurate Article, Organization, and Breadcrumb structured data.
- —Support important concepts with relevant images or video when they add understanding.
03
Measure qualified discovery, not only rankings.
Search journeys are becoming less linear. Track landing-page engagement, assisted conversions, branded search, referral quality, and the questions prospects bring into sales conversations. A page can be valuable even when the visible click path changes.
The safest long-term optimization is editorial discipline: publish fewer pages with a clear audience, maintain them as the field changes, and connect each one to a useful next step.
